A Bold Vision for a Bright Future
It was an accident. Johnny had no plans to end up in an emergency room. In fact, he had no plans at all when he came to Iowa from Texas with a friend. They were both using alcohol and drugs and simply took a road trip. Not long after they arrived, Johnny was driving his friend’s truck when he swerved to miss a deer.
“I flipped the car and it caught on fire. I woke up in the hospital,” Johnny says. He considers the accident a sign from God. “I don’t know if He caused the deer to run out. But I do know people say you have to get to your lowest point. I think that was my wake-up call.”
At 44, Johnny’s life had revolved around drugs since he was 18. “I was always all about myself; what I could do for me…I needed to get my life in order.”

However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.
