On both Thanksgiving and Christmas, we will serve special meals to the homeless men, women and children staying at our emergency shelter and recovery facilities. We will also deliver thousands of meals to low-income, homebound and disadvantaged individuals and families throughout the Greater Des Moines Area. This will take hundreds of on-site volunteers!

In addition, we have a number of holiday outreach opportunities perfect for families, small groups, congregations, businesses and others looking to reach out to those in need. We hope you will join us in making this an extra special time of year for hurting people in Central Iowa. Keep reading to learn how you can get involved.

Thanksgiving and Christmas Volunteers

We have a need for on-site volunteers as well as meal delivery driver teams on both Thanksgiving and Christmas.

  • On-site volunteers must be 13 or older and will help package and serve meals. The time commitment is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Meal delivery driver teams help deliver meals around the Des Moines area. We’ll provide addresses ahead of time, and will ask that you use your own GPS to determine your route. You’ll need a car large enough to fit 24-40 grocery sacks. This is a great option for families with younger kids! The time commitment is 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

We’re also looking for volunteers to help us take thousands of food donations before the holidays! Specifically, we need volunteers to help us from 8:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. on:

  • Wednesday, November 22
  • Saturday, December 23

Online registration for the above volunteer opportunities opens on
Monday, October 3.

Mission: Christmas

We will provide more than 200 Christmas gift bags for men, women and children in our emergency shelter and life recovery centers . . . and we couldn’t do it without you!

When you “adopt” a man, woman or child this holiday season, we’ll provide a specific gift list and you’ll fill a Christmas bag with hygiene items, devotional books, toys and other items from the list. The cost estimate per bag is $35-$50.

To sign up to provide one or more gift bags, give us a call at 515-265-7272 or email tjsimmons@hopeiowa.org.

Food Donations

We’ll serve and deliver 2,500 meals on Thanksgiving . . . and then we’ll turn around and do it again on Christmas. Plus, we serve more than 465 meals every day at Hope Ministries. You can help provide holiday meals by donating much-needed food items.

We will collect donations for our Thanksgiving and Christmas meals at our Bethel Mission ministry center (1310 6th Ave) on:

  • Wednesday, November 22, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 23, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Here are our specific food needs:

  • Ready-to-serve dinner rolls
  • Cookies in baggies (two per baggie)
  • Ground beef, pork loin, bacon, ham
  • Milk, cheese, eggs, butter
  • #10 cans of green beans or mixed veggies
  • Ketchup, mustard, mayo (large-size)

If you have any questions on any of these holiday opportunities, please contact our volunteer coordinator at (515) 265-7272 or info@hopeiowa.org.
